Liberty Fire Department is a combination department consisting of career, part time, and volunteer staffing. 16 career firefighters staff 2 stations working on 7, 2 man turns. At these stations are a rescue truck with ALS gear, an engine and 2 ambulances. To compliment the four career firefighters on duty, part time firefighter/paramedics work 12 or 24 hour shifts to make a 5 man turn. These part time paramedics are scheduled at the station that houses the ambulances. Liberty Fire Department employs career firefighter/paramedics after they have gone through the civil service testing, and are placed on an eligibility list for 2 years. Openings created in the fire department are then filled from this list. The current civil service list will expire in July 19, 2006. Applications are usually available in December. The civil service test consists of a written exam, that a score of 70% or better must be attained to proceed to the next phase. Bonus percentage points will be awarded for military experience, paramedic certification and 240 hour firefighter level II certification. With no more than 20% bonus points awarded to any one applicant. After obtaining the minimum 70% score, you will be invited back to take the physical exam. This part of the testing process is subject to change from the last exam, and the description of the agility test will be mailed to each applicant that is eligible prior to the physical agility test. If both parts of the exam are passed by the applicant, you will be placed on an eligibilty list ranked by scores that have been obtained during the testing process. THE POSITION: The Liberty Fire Department wants able, ambitious personnel who desire a worthwhile career as a professional firefighter/paramedic. Based on the opportunity to serve the public, a firefighter’s career consists of duties involving preservation of general health, safety, and welfare of citizens and property. After receiving thorough training, a firefighter performs a variety of specific assignments. Within ONE YEAR of date of hire all firefighters shall become state of Ohio certified paramedics and obtain the necessary protocol for Liberty EMS service. Fringe benefits include paid vacation, liberal sick leave and paid medical insurance, etc. promotion to higher ranks are made by competitive examinations within the division.
